My journey that brought me to this career path...
Growing up in Boundary Bay, Tsawwassen was a great experience! I was privileged to have a supportive family, close friends, safe community, and wonderful teachers at the local K-3 Elementary School. I remember that at this Elementary School we had to decide what we wanted to be when we grew up and I said "be a teacher". I don't know if it was the fact that I had had such wonderful teachers up to that point, that I loved school, that my mother was a teacher, or that I loved teaching my younger brother the new things I was learning, but I carried that desire throughout the rest of my schooling career. At an early age I started to babysit the children in our community, which I loved to do. Gradually I began to coach, and then began both working and volunteering with various children's organizations. Other career options came to mind through the years and I did my undergrad in Psychology but to me the most comfortable, rewarding, and exciting career for me was teaching and my decisions always reverted back to that Elementary School day when I had decided what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I was determined to be a teacher, despite my shyness and feelings of discomfort when standing in front of a class. To me that was the hardest part of this journey, to get over that fear of public speaking and being observed as the center of attention in the school setting. Just like my fear of heights while hiking on mountains has been overcome, so too has my fear of being in front of a class of students. To me this was conquering part of the mountain. I know I have not conquered it yet, and may never conquer it completely but each little hump I overcome is getting me closer and closer to the top.
To me teaching is a life-long journey that will continually shape who you are and who you want to become. It will never be stagnate, I will always be constantly changing, evolving, and learning. I know I will overcome challenges and fears and reflect on my failures and successes.
